As we approach Black Friday mania on November 29th, it’s time to rethink our fashion attitudes—what we’ve bought, what we don’t use or throw away, and what our actions cost us and our beautiful planet. My Eco-friendly Fashion Flashback to Fall | Winter 2023
Last year, around this time, I realized I was bored to tears with my wardrobe. I had transitioned from a high-paying corporate marketing position that encouraged designer clothes and trendy styles to a work-from-home freelancer and creative artist. I was tired of living in jeans and t-shirts, but no longer had the fancy budget to buy new outfits. Over the summer, I had started working out and eating a healthier diet, so by the time fall rolled around, nothing in my closet fit on my getting-there-toned body. Hmmm. It was time to get creative and develop my eco-friendly fashion style.
So, I started researching for clues and resources. As I blundered through my personal style discovery process, I rediscovered capsule wardrobes and minimalism and experimented with several fashion-style programs. I set up several Pinterest boards to help me collect and fine-tune what I uncovered, like a little raven collecting precious baubles in its nest. It was fun, fun, fun adventuring.

Next, I learned how to clean my closet using a few basic rules from the KonMari method. Tips from bloggers like Rebecca Mazzu gave me some good rules to follow when detoxing my wardrobe. For several months, my walk-in closet floor was covered in piles of clothing as I sorted through a little bit at a time. I resold the pricier designer pieces in excellent condition and donated many of them to local shelters and women’s success programs. I put the pieces I loved but needed some TLC in a separate bin for ongoing repair and upcycling. My goal was to get my wardrobe utilization above the 10% average.
Since I took my time and let the process evolve over the winter months, I learned more about what works for me and what doesn’t. I have a lot more fun with the challenge of finding eco-friendly fashions that fit my style and personality and are affordable to boot. The thrill of the chase—finding fabulous, eco-friendly yet affordable clothes that fit me. Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. Eileen Fisher champions the circular economy by designing timeless pieces and using organic fibers. They also promote a take-back program for recycling old garments. Expensive but high quality. I love them and use them year-round, so the cost per wear is now down to pennies.

I love to grab fun accent pieces from her collections to add a little sparkle to my minimalist outfits, especially in winter.

Bah, humbug. All the big exposés about sweat labor factories in Asia and Mexico have exposed the ugly corporate wolves pretending to wear green sheep’s clothing.
As I learned years ago when parenting teenagers, “Trust but verify.” Fortunately, there are standards to help guide you to purchase decisions that make your wardrobe happy while helping out the planet.
- Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifies organic textiles, ensuring social and environmental criteria are met.
- OEKO-TEX certification guarantees harmful substances are absent from products. This ensures that the clothing you choose is safe for both you and the planet.
- Fair Trade certification emphasizes ethical practices, ensuring workers earn fair wages under safe conditions. When shopping, look for these labels to ensure your purchases align with sustainable values and practices.
